Nigerian President Umaru Yar’Adua has declared the conflict that plagued the oil producing Niger Delta has ended after a recent amnesty for rebels in the region that he called successful.
Nigerian Government Plans Permanent Military Bases in Niger Delta
The Nigerian government plans to establish a permanent security presence in the Niger Delta region. President Umaru Yar’dua talked to lawmakers in Abuja about the new Maritime Security Agency, which he said will protect ships, ports and oil facilities from militant attacks.

The Nigerian government’s amnesty for Niger Delta militants ended today, and peace activist Onengiya Erekosima said the administration should quickly take advantage of the end of fighting to begin the process of building a genuine peace.
Nigerian Military Steps up Security in Niger Delta
The Nigerian army has reinforced security presence in the oil-producing Niger Delta, after the region’s leading militant group declared it may resume attacks on the oil industry when a 60-day cease-fire expires on Tuesday.
