As voters in Lebanon go to the polls on Sunday (June 7) , one issue seems to be dominating the elections more than any other: security. In the tumultuous landscape of Lebanese politics, the issue of security is of particular importance to one candidate: Nayla Tueni, whose father Gebran Tueni was assassinated six months after being elected in 2005 to the seat she now seeks.
Lebanon Struggles for Stability on Eve of Elections
Lebanon is a fractured land that has a long-standing struggle among a mixture of Christian sects, Sunnis, Shias, Druze and other religious factions. Since a resurgence of hostilities in 2006, when Israel launched a major military campaign against the armed group Hezbollah, the country has struggled to regain the relative stability it enjoyed after the 1975-1990 civil war and it now prepares for parliamentary elections on June 7.

Much of the Arab press, as well as ordinary people in the street, are rejoicing over the election of Democrat Barak Obama as the next president of the United States.
More Syrian Troops Deploy Along Lebanese Border
Syria has reportedly deployed more troops along its border with Lebanon, allegedly to “combat smuggling.” Meanwhile a Syrian Foreign Ministry spokesman is denying reports that Syria has withdrawn troops from its border with Iraq in retaliation for a weekend raid on a Syrian border town which Damascus blames on the United States.
