31st Marine Expeditionary Unit departs for Cobra Gold 2012

The 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit has kicked off the new year by departing for the multi-lateral training exercise Cobra Gold 2012.

Elements of the 31st MEU, including Battalion Landing Team 1st Battalion, 4th Marines and portions of Combat Logistics Battalion 31, departed from Okinawa en route to the Kingdom of Thailand, the host nation of the exercise.

Navy Minehunting Fleet Upgraded with Improved Sonar Capability

The first installation of the AN/SQQ-32(V)4 minehunting sonar upgrade began Jan. 11, aboard USS Guardian (MCM 5), in Sasebo, Japan, by engineers from Naval Surface Warfare Center, Panama City, Fla.

Medal of Honor recipient Baker dies at 66

Medal of Honor recipient, retired Master Sgt. John F. Baker Jr., died Jan. 20, in Columbia. Baker, a Northeast Columbia resident and loyal supporter of Fort Jackson, was 66.

A memorial service for Baker is scheduled for 1 p.m., Friday, at the Post Theater.

Baker, who had earned the nation's highest award for valor in combat for his heroic actions in Vietnam, regularly attended ceremonies and special events on post, along with his wife Donnell.

Bold Alligator 2012 to Revitalize Amphibious Operations

Commander, United States Fleet Forces (USFF) and Commander, Marine Corps Forces Command (MARFORCOM) will lead the East Coast's largest joint and multinational amphibious assault exercise in the past ten years officials announced Jan. 25.

Exercise Bold Alligator 2012 (BA12) will revitalize Navy and Marine Corps amphibious expeditionary tactics, techniques and procedures, and reinvigorate its culture of conducting combined Navy and Marine Corps operations from the sea.
