They Think You Are a Terrorist
By Harold Hutchison

If you needed a more clearer expression of just how some anti-gunners view you, just look at the column by Don Kaul that appeared in the 29 December, 2012 edition of the Des Moines Register. The column, a rant that made Piers Morgan’s pronouncements seem rational, was described as “unethical opinion journalism, unprofessional column writing, an abuse of Kaul’s position and power as a columnist, and a disgrace to the paper” by Jack Marshall at EthicsAlarms.com.

That said, it is worth noting exactly what Kaul thinks of those of us who support the Second Amendment. When we, as supporters of the Second Amendment get asked why we can’t compromise, folks like Mr. Kaul ought to be Exhibit A in our response. Over the last five decades, Kaul had constantly demonized the NRA, usually writing his columns after shootings. In 2011, he described the Supreme Court as “the NRA's judicial arm” after it had invalidated the gun ban in Washington D.C. Second Amendment grounds and then threw out Chicago’s handgun ban when it declared that the 14th Amendment meant that the Second Amendment applied to state and local governments.

Kaul’s anti-gun extremism is hinted at when he wrote, “Obama’s speech was fine as far as it went but it didn’t go very far. Neither have any of the other responses I’ve heard.” So, just how far would Mr. Kaul have gone? His column is chilling, not only for his sweeping desire for gun bans, but for just how quickly he is willing to toss out other parts of the Constitution.

In his rant, Kaul displayed just as much disregard for the First Amendment as he does for the Second Amendment. “Declare the NRA a terrorist organization and make membership illegal. Hey! We did it to the Communist Party, and the NRA has led to the deaths of more of us than American Commies ever did,” he wrote.

Kaul proceeded to go further, suggesting that NRA headquarters be torn down, and went on to write, “I would tie Mitch McConnell and John Boehner, our esteemed Republican leaders, to the back of a Chevy pickup truck and drag them around a parking lot until they saw the light on gun control.” Imagine if such comments had been made about Dianne Feinstein, Charles Schumer, or President Obama. There would have been no end to the outrage from certain quarters of the mainstream media. But Kaul’s hate speech has yet to draw serious criticism from anyone on the left.

Kaul went on to call for making possession of unlicensed assault rifles “a felony.” Then, in a chilling comments afterwards, he added, “If some people refused to give up their guns, that ‘prying the guns from their cold, dead hands’ thing works for me.”

In his column, Kaul wrote, “The thing missing from the debate so far is anger — anger that we live in a society where something like the Sandy Hook Elementary massacre can happen and our main concern is not offending the NRA’s sensibilities.”

However, while Kaul provided the anger, Tim Graham of Newsbusters.com pointed out he added something else to the table. “The Newtown school shooting brought out all his ugliness. He proposed a new liberal agenda: repeal the Second Amendment, declare the NRA a terrorist organization and make membership illegal, and well, make violent threats to Republican leaders and NRA members.”

Historian Victor Davis Hanson noted at Pajamas Media, “What would be the Register’s reaction should a conservative opponent of abortion dare write, ‘Repeal the First Amendment; ban Planned Parenthood as a terrorist organization; and drag Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi from a truck’? If an idiot were to write that trash, I doubt the Washington Times or Wall Street Journal would print such sick calls for overturning the Constitution and committing violence against public officials.”

Extremists like Don Kaul, and anti-gun politicians are moving to exploit the tragedy in Newtown, Connecticut. The depths of their hatred for you as a gun owner – never mind as a pro-Second Amendment activist – cannot be underestimated. You need to act to save your guns.

Before you dismiss this warning, keep this in mind: Kaul complained about Feinstein’s plan to exempt over 900 firearms in her proposed gun grab. He also seeks the repeal of the Second Amendment, leaving no constitutional obstacle to whatever gun ban he wants.

That said, Kaul and other anti-gun extremists can be stopped before they get their gun bans. To do that, you have to get involved. Go to http://membership.nrahq.org/ to join the NRA. Then go to https://www.nraila.org/get-involved-locally/forms/secure/frontlines.aspx to become part of NRA-ILA’s Frontlines to help fight these anti-gun extremists.
