An Afghan National Security and International Security Assistance Force patrol found a weapons cache during a dismounted patrol in Shah Wali Kot district, Kandahar province, Tuesday, Nov. 3.

The joint security patrol, while conducting a presence patrol, came under rocket fire by insurgents occupying a firing position on nearby high ground. The joint security patrol returned fire using air and ground assets. After the firing stopped, the joint security force moved to, and occupied the deserted insurgent firing positions.

Acting on tips, the security force moved to a nearby suspected-insurgent compound. The security force found the compound empty of occupants, but searched it and found a weapons cache with numerous improvised explosive device remote control initiation devices, IED components, grenades, detonators, machine gun ammunition, ball bearings and automatic weapons.

The cache was safely destroyed on site.

Initial reports indicate no civilians were injured in this operation.
