U.S. Planning Defeat of Terrorist Group

Comments by General Martin Dempsey, the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, indicate that the United States is planning to take down the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS), also known as the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL).

According to a report in the Washington Free Beacon, Dempsey made the comments at a security conference in Aspen, Colorado, saying “[W]e are preparing a strategy that has a series of options to present to our elected leaders on how we can initially contain, eventually disrupt, and finally defeat ISIL over time.”

ISIL began taking control of large parts of western and northern Iraq last month. The terrorist group also recently seized a gas field in Syria in a major battle that left over 200 people dead. The group’s rise was assisted by Sunnis, who were marginalized by Iraqi prime minister Nouri al-Malaki. As a result, Dempsey said many military leaders felt “there was no reason to defend the Maliki government.”

Iraq has recently purchased Iraqi Su-25 “Frogfoot” ground-attack jets, and is reportedly awaiting delivery of F-16C Fighting Falcons.
