ON THE VERGE OF VICTORY?
NRA Likely to Defeat Gun Grab
By Harold Hutchison
The National Rifle Association may be on the verge of defeating S. 649 – a victory after the tragic shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut that left 20 children and six adults dead at the hands of a shooter who committed suicide.
This reversal for anti-gun activists, who had won victories in several states, comes despite a massive push by Barack Obama and many media figures. Votes on the legislation have been delayed to later this week, while Senators Joe Manchin (D-WV) and Pat Toomey (R-PA) consider revisions to the bill to try to gain support.
The background check provisions of the Manchin-Toomey compromise also featured a number of pro-gun changes that were reported inserted by lobbyists with the Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms. News of those provisions broke over the weekend.
Some Republicans who had supported starting debate on the measure were shifting to oppose the legislation, while the number of Democrats who announced opposition had climbed to three.
