Incident Occurs Off Turkey
By Harold Hutchison

The frigate USS Taylor (FFG 50) ran aground off Turkey just over a month into a planned seven-month deployment. The ship is one of seventeen such vessels still in United States Navy service.

According to a report by the Navy Times, the Taylor ran aground on 12 February while attempting to dock near Samsun, Turkey. No injuries were reported.

The frigate left Mayport, Florida on the deployment to support what a U.S. Navy release called “maritime security operations and theater security cooperation efforts in the Black Sea to establish and enhance cooperation, mutual training and interoperability with regional partner nations and allies.”

The U.S. Navy had 51 of those vessels in service – and a number were sold to countries like Egypt, Turkey, and Pakistan. The ships were originally equipped with a Mk 13 missile launcher, but those still with the U.S. Navy saw the launcher removed in 2000.
