With precise coordinates given by forward observers back to the “gun line,” accurate steel on target is accomplished. A forward observers, or FO’s, mission is an integral part of field artillery. In Afghanistan, when ground forces are engaged by the enemy it is imperative that soldiers manning the gun line are quick to respond with accuracy.

In Ghazni province, soldiers of Alpha Battery, 2nd Battalion, 32nd Field Artillery, 4th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division, are sharing their skills and fundamental knowledge with their Afghan partners. This training has increased the capabilities of the Afghan National Army and is a cornerstone for a safe and responsible transition by 2014.

Through the extended partnership between the “Proud American” Battalion and their Afghan partners, they were able to place 15 effective rounds on target using Afghan D-30 122 mm artillery, directly contributing to their mission of protecting the local populace and neutralizing enemy threats. With the fundamental knowledge the FO’s posses, the 2-32’s Proud Americans are teaching their Afghan counterparts how they too can be the “King of Battle.”
