Forces under the command of ISAF captured two insurgent leaders during operations in Afghanistan over the weekend. The captures come in the wake of a 17 May insurgent attack that killed or wounded dozens of Afghan civilians.
A Haqqani Network leader and four flunkies were captured during operations in Paktiya province. The Haqqani leader, not identified by ISAF, was a known improvised explosive device expert, responsible for constructing and distributing IEDs to insurgent cells in his local area who also carried out attack against ISAF and Afghan forces. A Taliban leader responsible for personnel decisions and facilitating the movement of weapons was captured in Logar province.
Forces under the command of ISAF’s Regional Command East killed 26 insurgents, captured five more, located two weapons caches, and disarmed 14 improvised explosive devices. A dozen of the insurgents killed over the last three days died in a firefight with a local presence patrol of ANA Special Forces working with coalition troops.
