Operation in Paktiya Kills Insurgent Bigwigs
By Harold Hutchison

An ISAF operation in Paktiya province killed two senior Haqqani network leaders. Qari Azzam and Mukhlis were both involved in attacks on ISAF and Afghan forces. Azzam was also involved in coordinating mine and improvised explosive device emplacement in the local area, providing military equipment to insurgents and organizing kidnappings in order to extort money. Mukhlis interacted with high-level Haqqani leaders to provide guidance to insurgents.

ISAF also confirmed the capture of two Taliban facilitators during operations over the last two days. One was captured in Kandahar, where he was involved in improvised explosive device attacks. The other was captured in Baghlan province, where he used his house to store weapons and explosives, and also controlled Taliban fighters.

ISAF’s Regional Command East reported that forces under its command killed seven insurgents, captured four more, disarmed 16 IEDs, and had located three weapons caches. One cache located in Paktiya province contained three IEDs.
