Death of Opposition Leader Sparks Protests
By Harold Hutchison

The second assassination in 2013 to rock the North African country of Tunisia has sparked massive protests in Tunis, the capital. The victim, Mohammed Brahmi, was a vocal critic of the country’s Islamist government.

Brahmi was also a member of the Constituent Assembly, which is tasked with drawing up a new constitution for Tunisia. In February, another secular politician Chokri Belaid, was also assassinated, sparking violence.

Brahmi’s killing comes as Tunisia was preparing to celebrate 56 years of independence from France. The ruling Islamist party issues a statement condemning the assassination.
