Spanish Navy Thwarts Pirate Attack in Indian Ocean

Spanish forces have captured six alleged pirates in the Indian Ocean, after the suspects attacked a Spanish navy ship.

The Spanish defense ministry says pirates aboard a skiff (small boat) opened fire on the combat support ship “Patiño” early Thursday.

A statement says the navy ship exchanged fire with the pirates, who eventually tried to flee on their boat. A military helicopter caught up with the pirates, who then surrendered.

Suspected US Missile Strike Kills 4 in Pakistan

Pakistani officials say a U.S. drone strike has killed four suspected militants in the country's northwest near the Afghan border.

Intelligence sources say the missiles hit a vehicle driven by rebels Thursday in the North Waziristan tribal region.

This marks the second drone strike in the region this week. Late Tuesday, U.S. missiles killed four suspected militants after hitting a compound near Miran Shah, the main town in North Waziristan.

Militants Kill 14 Pakistani Soldiers

Pakistani officials say at least 14 paramilitary soldiers were killed late Wednesday when suspected Baluch separatists ambushed their vehicle in southwestern Baluchistan province.

The officials said the incident took place in Turbat district near the Iranian border. Baluchistan is home to various militant groups, including pro-Taliban factions, as well as Baluch militants. The province has been in the grip of a regional insurgency for years as separatist militants fight for more autonomy and greater control over natural resources.

Russian Police Officer Killed While Defusing Bomb in Dagestan

A Russian policeman was killed and at least eight of his colleagues were wounded when a powerful bomb exploded as they were attempting to defuse it in the North Caucasus region of Dagestan.

Russia's Interior Ministry said Wednesday the bomb was found near the village of Komsomolskoye, in the northern part of Dagestan. The ministry says the device included several canisters, one of which exploded as police tried to defuse them.

Ghana Seizes Arms Believed Bound for Nigeria

Police in Ghana say they have seized a truckload of weapons believed to be headed to Nigeria, where the government is struggling to contain sectarian violence and protests over rising fuel costs.

Authorities say they found double-barrel guns and ammunition inside a truck marked with the name of a soft drink company. Police say the items were hidden beneath a metal plate in the truck.

The seizure took place in Ghana's capital, Accra, on Tuesday after authorities received a tip.

Police arrested five people, including two Nigerian nationals and three suspects from Ghana.

8 Shot Dead in Northern Nigeria

Police in northern Nigeria say suspected members of a radical Islamist sect have shot dead eight people, including four police officers.

Authorities blame Boko Haram for the attack, which happened late Tuesday at a bar in the town of Potiskum in Yobe state.

The fundamentalist Islamic group has threatened to kill Christians in Muslim-majority northern Nigeria as it seeks to turn the country into an Islamic state.

Truck Bomb Kills 35 in NW Pakistan

Pakistani officials say a bomb blast near the Afghan border has killed at least 35 people and wounded more than 60 others, in one of the deadliest attacks in the country's northwest in months.

Authorities say a remote-control bomb in a truck exploded in the Khyber tribal agency on Tuesday.

Khyber RegionThe blast struck near a bus terminal in the town of Jamrud, destroying several vehicles parked near a fuel pump. There was no immediate claim of responsibility.

Kenyan Youths Urged to Join Al-Shabab Jihadist Campaign

A new video message posted to a jihadist website calls on Muslim youths in Kenya to join the Somali militant group al-Shabab in its fight against Kenyan forces. While the message is typical of the group's propaganda, the language is not.

In a 50-minute video sermon, a man in a camouflage military jacket reads from the Quran and calls on Kenyans to join al-Shabab's jihadist campaign.

13 Bodies Found in Western Mexico

Officials in Mexico say police have found 13 bodies dumped near a gas station in the western state of Michoacan.

The bodies were discovered on Monday in the town of Zitacuaro, 160 kilometers west of Mexico City. The victims were all male, and had all been shot in the head.

Michoacan, the home state of Mexican President Felipe Calderon, has been one of the worst-hit areas in a wave of drug-related violence that has left around 50,000 dead over the last several years.
