New Security Measures Follow Nigerian Bombing

Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan is introducing a series of new anti-terrorism measures following a New Year's Eve bombing that killed four people in the capital.

In the next week, President Jonathan will appoint a special advisor on terrorism and a presidential committee on the control of explosive materials. Spokesman Ima Niboro said there also will be an inspection of police-licensed armories to establish the source of their arms and ammunition, as well as the installation of closed-circuit televisions, or CCTV's, to better monitor public places.

Pakistani Governor Killed in Islamabad Shooting

The governor of Pakistan's Punjab Province has been assassinated, allegedly by one of his security guards in Islamabad.

Pakistani Interior Minister Rehman Malik says the slain governor, Salman Taseer, was returning to his car after visiting a shopping center in the Pakistani capital when one of his armed guards sprayed him with bullets.

Witnesses say the Punjab Governor fell down and the attacker dropped his gun before surrendering to police.

Interior Minister Malik told reporters an investigation has been ordered into the incident.

Terror Trial of Eight Men Begins in France

Eight men are on trial in Paris on charges of armed robbery to finance Islamist extremism. As the proceedings begin, there is heightened concern about terrorism in Europe.

The eight men are accused of one armed robbery and another botched attempt in the Paris area in 2004 and 2005. The attacks allegedly were intended to finance radical Islam, notably in Iraq. Prosecutors claim the eight, who include French and North Africans, made contacts with extremists linked to al-Qaida in Syria, Algeria and Turkey.

Nigerian Militants Deny Role in Abuja Bombing

Militants in southern Nigeria say they had no role in the bomb that killed at least four people in the capital, Abuja, on New Year's eve.

The Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta, or MEND, denied any involvement in the attack, in a statement e-mailed to reporters late Saturday.

MEND had claimed responsibility for another bombing in Abuja October 1 that killed 12 people.

Friday's bombing in the capital went off at a busy market where people were celebrating the new year. No one has claimed responsibility for the blast, which wounded another 26 people.

South Korea Again Describes North Korea as 'Enemy'

North Korea is again the "enemy" of South Korea, a designation that has not been used for six years.

The designation is given to the North in South Korea's latest defense white paper. But the document does not revive the designation of the communist state as the "main enemy." The paper also delves into details about North Korea's military capabilities.

The deputy defense minister for policy, Chang Kwang-il, explains why the label is again being applied.

Chang says this is to inform the South Korean public of the reality of North Korea and it sends a strong warning to Pyongyang.

Danish Security Foils 'Imminent' Terror Attack

Denmark's intelligence service says it has arrested four people plotting what it called an "imminent" terrorist attack against the Jyllands-Posten newspaper, which printed controversial cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad.

The head of the agency, Jakob Scharf, described some of the suspects as "militant Islamists." He said the group had been planning to enter the newspaper's building and kill as many people as possible.

Suspected US Drones Kill 6 in Pakistan

Pakistani intelligence officials say two suspected U.S. drone strikes have killed at least six people in Pakistan's northwestern tribal region.

The officials said the first attack Tuesday struck a house in the North Waziristan region near the Afghan border, killing at least four militants.

A short time later, officials say the second attack hit the same site, killing at least two more people.

Parcel Bomb Found at Greek Embassy in Rome

Italian police say a parcel bomb was found Monday at the Greek embassy in Rome.

Police say the device failed to explode and was defused by bomb disposal experts.

The bomb arrived just days after two similar packages exploded at the Chilean and Swiss embassies in the Italian capital. Two staffers were wounded in those blasts.

Members of an anarchist group claimed responsibility for last week's parcel bombs, but there was no immediate claim for Monday's attempt.

Britain Holds 9 Men on Terrorism Charges

A British court on Monday ordered nine men charged with plotting bomb attacks against British cities to be held in jail until their next court date in January.

Anti-terror prosecutor Sue Hemming advised that the nine should be charged with "engaging in conduct in preparation for acts of terrorism."

Police have not released details of the threats, but they did say the conspiracy began October 1 and continued until December 20, when the suspects were arrested.
