USS Carl Vinson Departs Haiti; Carrier Rendered Critical First Response

The Nimitz-class aircraft carrier USS Carl Vinson (CVN 70) departed the waters near Port-au-Prince, Haiti Feb. 1 after rendering humanitarian assistance to the victims of a massive 7.0 earthquake that struck the Caribbean nation Jan. 12. Arriving on station less than 72 hours after the quake, Carl Vinson immediately rendered assistance. Over two weeks, Vinson and its embarked 19 helicopters flew more than 2,200 sorties, delivering more than 166 tons of food, 89,000 gallons of water and 38,700 lbs.

Airmen airdrop relief supplies to Haitians

Charleston Air Force Base Airmen airdropped approximately 14,000 bottles of water and 14,500 Meals, Ready to Eat Jan. 23 to the outlying area of Port-au-Prince, Haiti. The airdrop mission was flown as part of Operation Unified Response to save lives and bring relief to Haitians suffering after the Jan. 12 7.0 earthquake devastated the island nation. Lt. Col. Leon Strickland, the 437th Operations Group standardization and evaluation chief, began working the airdrop mission Jan.

U.S. Navy Ship’s Team Describes Haiti Aid Efforts

On Jan. 14, two days after a magnitude 7 earthquake shook Haiti, an international team of naval officers and associated partners was on board the USS Gunston Hall in Norfolk, Va.   The ship was fully loaded with food for a maritime security exercise in sub-Saharan Africa when Navy Capt. Cynthia Thebaud, commander of Destroyer Squadron 60, received a call to head to Haiti. “I don't think you could find a ship that has a better composition of people and things on board for this type of mission,” Thebaud said during a Jan.

WRIGHT-PATTERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Ohio (AFNS) -- A three-person medical team from the Wright-Patterson Medical Center here is providing aeromedical evacuation support to assist victims of the earthquake in Port-au-Prince, Haiti. The critical care air transport team, or CCATT, is staging from MacDill Air Force Base, Fla. with the 45th Aeromedical Evacuation Squadron.

High-Speed Ferry Ships to Support Haiti Relief

High-speed ferry ships MV Huakai and MV Alakai are preparing to sail to Haiti in support of Operation Unified Response to provide disaster relief following the Jan. 12 earthquake. Huakai and Alakai were originally built to serve as passenger and vehicle ferries in Hawaii but were turned over to the Maritime Administration's custody when the ferry service went bankrupt. The ships will be under operational control of the Military Sealift Command (MSC) during Operation Unified Response. The ships' main tasks will be to transfer equipment and personnel in the region.

Army Reserve readies only aviation brigade for deployment to Haiti

The only Army Reserve aviation brigade, the 244th Aviation Brigade, has geared up to deploy troops and equipment to Haiti in support of Operation Unified Response. More than 300 Soldiers from 244th Aviation Brigade will deploy today to support humanitarian operations in Haiti. Along with Soldiers, the 244th is sending nine CH-47 Chinook helicopters and four UH-60 Black Hawks. The CH-47 twin-engine, tandem heavy-lift helicopter is considered the workhorse of the Army and is designed for transportation of cargo and troops.
