Rolling Stoned - Soldier Gets Rocked by Stone Throwing Afghan Crowd

"Sticks and stones may break my bones" is an old adage that has new meaning for Sgt. Kathryn Burke, 402nd Brigade Support Battalion, 5th Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 2nd Infantry Division. Burke was manning the gunner's hatch of a Mine Resistant Armor Protected vehicle in a resupply convoy bound for Forward Operating Base Frontenac when she gained her new insight. After a few convoy briefs and a few cigarettes, Burke climbed into the MRAP and took up her place in the hatch as gunner for the first time.

IJC Operational Update, Dec. 11: Haqqani Facilitator Detained in Khowst; Security Discussed in Farah

An Afghan-international security force detained a couple of militants in Khowst province today, one of whom was a sought after Haqqani facilitator. The facilitator is responsible for the shipment and distribution of weapons to other militant elements in the area. The joint security force searched a compound near the village of Badal Kalay in the Nader Shakhot district where intelligence sources indicated the facilitator was located. The facilitator identified himself and surrendered without incident.

Suspected AQI-network leaders captured in Baghdad, Diyala Provinces

Iraqi Security Forces arrested three suspected leaders within their respective al-Qaeda in Iraq (AQI) cells, as well as three suspected criminal associates, during three joint security operations conducted today in Baghdad and Diyala Provinces.   In Baqubah, located northeast of Baghdad, Iraqi Police and U.S. advisors searched two buildings for a suspected AQI leader for the Tarmiyah area. Iraqi Police identified and arrested the suspected AQI leader, who allegedly assists in acquiring suicide vests and coordinating suicide attacks in the region.

IJC Operational Update, Dec. 10: Rebuilt Bridge Nears Completion

The reconstruction of a bridge destroyed in August is nearing completion due to the combined efforts of local government agencies, contractors and ISAF service members. Efforts to rebuild the Saracha Bridge along Highway 7 in Nangahar province began immediately after flash floods destroyed it and cut off all traffic from Torkham Gate to Jalalabad, Aug. 31. Canadian Medic Returns to Kandahar to Mentor Afghan National Army

Surviving just one tour in Southern Afghanistan is no mean feat. Many of the world's best and brightest soldiers have fought and died here, and still more return home irrevocably shaken. There are among us, however, soldiers whose mettle has been cast in the furnaces of war, and who feel it is their duty to return, having emerged battle-tested and knowledgeable. Army Cpl. An Afghan-international security force killed seven militants and detained four others in Laghman province early today while pursuing a Taliban IED facilitator responsible for several suicide attacks in the region. Security forces Airmen end operations at Camp Bucca

Members of the 887th Expeditionary Security Forces Squadron officially ended operations during a deactivation ceremony Dec. 3 at Camp Bucca, Iraq. The furling of the squadron guidon marked the end of the squadron's three-year partnership with the Army providing counterinsurgency, detainee operations and intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance support. The 887th ESFS was activated in May 2007.

US Navy Divers Continue to Assist in Afghanistan Recovery Operation

A team of U.S. Navy divers from Mobile Diving and Salvage Unit (MDSU) 2, Company 2-3, assisted in the recovery operations of the body of a U.S. Army sergeant from the Murghab River in northern Afghanistan Nov. 29. The MDSU 2 divers, who are attached to Commander Task Force (CTF) 56, deployed from Bahrain to support Operation Hero Recovery. IJC Operational Update, Dec. 7: Air Strike Hits Stronghold in Konar

An international security force conducted an air strike today and destroyed a known Taliban stronghold consisting of bunkers and prepared defensive positions in Konar province. The security force targeted the stronghold near the village of Tsangar Darah in the mountainous Watapur District after intelligence sources indicated militant activity at the location. In other operations today, an Afghan-international security force in Khowst province detained a Haqqani IED cell leader and several other militants after searching a compound.

Operational Update, Dec. 4: Insurgents Detained in Kandahar

An Afghan-international security force detained several suspected militants in Kandahar province today after searching a compound known to be used by a Taliban facilitator. The joint security force targeted the compound near the village of Nurayo Kariz, approximately 10 miles northeast of Kandahar City in Arghandab district. The force searched the compound without incident and detained the militants, including the Taliban facilitator.
