ISF arrest 21 in Baghdad, Bayji on suspicion of AQI VBIED activity

Iraqi Security Forces arrested 21 individuals during two joint security operations today targeting vehicle-borne improvised explosive device network members in Baghdad and Bayji.   Iraqi Security Forces operating in western Baghdad arrested 17 suspects while serving a warrant for an individual allegedly involved in VBIED attacks. The joint security team searched several buildings and sequestered multiple individuals for questioning.

ANP Confiscate 600 Pounds of Ammonium Nitrate, Neutralize Enemy Fighters

The Afghan national army, assisted by coalition forces, conducted a cordon and search in western Oruzgan province, Oct. 31, in order to increase security in support of the Afghanistan presidential run-off elections. The operation led to the seizure and safe destruction of 600 pounds of ammonium nitrate used to create roadside bombs. Several armed enemy fighters were killed after an unsuccessful attempt to engage the ANA with small arms fire. No civilians were injured during this operation.

ANA, ANP Detain Four, Kill Eleven in Zabul Province

The Afghan national army and Afghan national police, assisted by Coalition forces, conducted a cordon and search in the Arghandab District, Oct. 30, to search for a weapons cache and known insurgent leadership. The operation led to the detainment of four insurgents and several others being killed. The intent of the operation was to decrease roadside bomb usage along the major highway going into Qalat City in Deh Chopan.

Operational Update, Nov. 3: Suspected Militants Detained

An Afghan-international security force detained several suspected militants during the search of a compound in Kandahar province known to be used by a Taliban facilitator operating in the area Monday. The joint security force targeted the compound in northern Kandahar City after intelligence indicated militant activity.

Iraqi, US forces detain car bomb suspects

Iraqi Security Forces arrested 13 people yesterday during three operations in connection with car-bomb networks between Baghdad and Kirkuk, military officials reported. Working with U.S. advisors, an Iraqi unit arrested a suspected member of a vehicle-bomb network in southern Kirkuk.

Security Forces Airmen, Soldiers Mentor Afghan Prison Guards

Air Force Security Forces Defenders, along with U.S. Army Soldiers from the Zabul Provincial Reconstruction Team, met with prison officials, Oct. 28, as part of an on-going mentoring project at a nearby prison. The prison, located close to the PRT compound, has become an important project for the team due to activity this summer. "We had seen the prison have some real troubles this summer," said Lt. Col. Andy Veres, the PRT commander.

Citizen's tip leads to hidden weapons

A concerned local citizen recently contacted U.S. Soldiers about a site insurgents used to store weapons here, just northwest of Abu Ghraib. With the help of local Iraqi Army Soldiers, the Fort Lewis-based troops assigned to Company A, 4th Battalion, 9th Infantry Regiment, 4th Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 2nd Infantry Division, quickly sprang into action and dug up the insurgent’s weapons cache, Nov.

Operational Update, Nov. 2: Afghan-International Security Force Detains Taliban Militant in Kandahar

A joint Afghan-International Security Assistance Force operation detained one militant in Kandahar province on Sunday while in pursuit of a Taliban District leader and senior commander of a sizable militant element in the area. The joint force targeted a location outside of the village of Daylanur, north of Kandahar City, after intelligence indicated militant activity. The joint force used escalation of force measures to stop two motorcycles travelling south toward the city.
