IJC Operational Update: Nov. 30: Thousands of Hats Delivered to Afghan Children

ISAF service members serving in the Lithuanian-led provincial reconstruction team in western Afghanistan distributed thousands of handmade hats to schoolchildren in Ghowr province Nov. 25. Almost 2,000 hats were given to Afghan children in Chaghcharan by members of the PRT during the final phase of the project, "Warm Hats for Afghan Children." The project began in August, when Lithuanian service members asked their countrymen and women to knit hats for Afghan children to wear during the winter months.

Missing Paratrooper Found

KABUL, Afghanistan (Nov. 30) - The second U.S. paratrooper who was missing after being swept away by a fast moving current while on an airdrop re-supply mission Nov. 4 in western Afghanistan was found yesterday. Sergeant Brandon Islip, 24, was recovered from the Bala Murgahab River in Badghis province after a local Afghan citizen provided information on his whereabouts.

Iraqi Police arrest AQI IED-cell members near Baghdad, Kirkuk

Iraqi Police arrested four suspected members of IED-cells belonging to al-Qaeda in Iraq (AQI) today during two joint security operations near Baghdad and Kirkuk. During a joint security operation conducted in Karmah, west of Baghdad, Iraqi Police arrested an alleged associate of a vehicle-borne improvised explosive device cell believed to be responsible for attacks targeting government buildings and civilians in Baghdad.   Intelligence sources led the security team to a location where the suspect was known to be hiding.

ISF arrest suspected terrorist after three year pursuit

Iraqi Security Forces, advised by U.S. forces, arrested Harith Sa’dun Dawud Al-Rubayi, a suspected leader of a terrorist group, and a suspected associate, Mortuda Nasir Hamud, in Diyala province Nov. 22. A warrant was issued by the Highest Judicial Court of Muqdadiyah for Harith’s arrest for suspicion of murder, kidnapping and violent explosives attacks against Iraqi citizens and ISF units.

3rd Combat Aviation Brigade Arrives in Afghanistan

Soldiers from the 3rd Infantry Division's Combat Aviation Brigade uncased their colors in a transfer of authority ceremony at Bagram Airfield, Nov. 24. "The 3rd Infantry Division is a world-renowned fighting organization that is known for two things: starting a fight, and finishing one," said Col. Don Galli, commander of the 3rd CAB.

Several militants in Kandahar province were detained by an Afghan- international security force today. One of the suspects is a known Taliban facilitator responsible for the financial and logistical support of militant elements in the area. Tips from intelligence sources led the joint force to search compounds near the village of Bahay Dehe Sufla, southwest of Kandahar City. The compounds were searched without incident.

Joint teamwork keeps foreign fighters from crossing borders

Intelligence reporting indicated that foreign fighters could be located in a town in Iraq's northwestern Ninewah province near the Syrian border. A short time later, ground forces moved through the city. Simultaneously, Hawaii-based Soldiers flying two UH-60 Black Hawks inserted Iraqi commandos and Michigan-based infantrymen near the main supply route to prevent vehicles and personnel fleeing the town, Nov.

The Norwegian Home Guard commander visited the ISAF Joint Command at the North Kabul International Airport military compound Nov. 22.
Major Gen. Bernt Iver Ferdinand Brovold was the guest of Maj. Gen. Jacques Lechevallier, IJC deputy commander. During his brief visit to IJC, the Norwegian general was briefed on the different types of threats Afghan people face and the IJC counterinsurgency strategy.

Marines Eat, Sleep, Operate Out of Afghan National Police Compound

Almost like clockwork, as soon as the Marines with 2nd Battalion, 2nd Marine Regiment's Police Mentoring Team rise from their cots, shave any overnight facial stubble and brush their teeth, Lali, an 8-year-old Afghan boy from Hazar Geft, enters the Afghan national police compound and waits. The PMT Marines eat, sleep and operate out of the ANP compound in Garmsir, Afghanistan. Lali stands by, greeting the groggy Marines with a "good morning," and waits for any tasks the Marines have for him. "One day he just walked in, and we started talking to him," said Cpl. Frank D.
