Hurricane Hunters fly first winter storm

AFRCC Airmen aid in Arizona search for 55 stranded people

Airmen at the Air Force Rescue Coordination Center aided local and state first responders while searching for several missing individuals who were stranded near Flagstaff, Ariz.. Last week's winter storm dumped several inches of snow, trapping 55 individuals who were hunting or looking for the perfect Christmas tree in the area.

Air Force officials launch satellite to enhance military communications

Coalition airpower integrated with ground forces in Iraq and the International Security Assistance Force in Afghanistan during operations Dec. 9 according to Combined Air and Space Operations Center officials here. Air operations in Afghanistan: Asmar Air Force F-15E Strike Eagle aircraft provided armed overwatch for friendly forces. A show of force was requested to deter enemy action when personnel were observed acting suspiciously along a road.

Coalition airpower integrated with ground forces in Iraq and the International Security Assistance Force in Afghanistan during operations Dec. 8 according to Combined Air and Space Operations Center officials here. Air operations in Afghanistan: Asadabad Air Force F-16 Fighting Falcon aircraft flew armed overwatch and area reconnaissance for a friendly forces patrol. When insurgents were seen approaching the friendly patrol, a pre-emptive strike with precision-guided munitions was authorized.

Airmen aid in search for stranded hiker

TYNDALL AIR FORCE BASE, Fla. (AFNS) -- Members of the Air Force Rescue Coordination Center here aided in search operations with local and state agencies to save a stranded man late Dec. 1 in the Sonoran Desert in Apache Junction, Ariz. The young man was hiking on Superstition Mountain, became stranded and was suffering from hypothermia. He placed a 911 call on his cell phone when his phone battery died.

Dolphins fly to New Caledonia with Hickam C-17 crew

Airmen aboard C-17 Globemaster IIIs from Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam transported dolphins from the Navy Marine Mammals Program in San Diego, Calif., to Noumea, New Caledonia, Nov. 8 to locate and dispose of more than 200 contact mines that were leftover from World War II. The active-duty and Reserve C-17 aircrew from JB Hickam helped deliver the dolphins for Lagoon Minex 2009, a humanitarian project in which U.S. forces along with French, Australian and New Zealand military will work together Nov.

Iraqi airmen score bull's eye with Hellfire missile

For the first time since the re-formation of the Iraqi air force, an Iraqi pilot fired a missile from an aircraft Nov. 4, at a target on a bombing range near Al Asad Air Base, Iraq.  A three-man Iraqi aircrew from Squadron 3 fired an AGM-114 Hellfire missile from an AC-208 Caravan, officials at Multinational Force Security Transition Command Iraq announced in a Nov. 10 press release. The event marked a milestone for the Iraqi military as they become increasingly responsible for their own security.

Airmen fly C-5M into U.S. record books

Airmen flew a C-5M Super Galaxy into the official record books Oct. 30 when a previous world-record-attempt flight was certified by U.S. National Aeronautic Association officials. A Dover Air Force Base, Del., aircrew flying a C-5M named The Spirit of Normandy consisted of eight 512th Airlift Wing reservists and four 436th Airlift Wing active-duty members set 41 records in a single flight that included various altitude, payload and time-to-climb records. "I am pleased to announce that all 41 of the records claimed in the C-5M on Sept.
