Children Treated After Gun Battle

ISAF forces operating in the Nawah-ye Barakzai district of Helmand province yesterday engaged a number of insurgents with small arms fire after being fired upon. The insurgents broke contact and fled the area on motorcycles. Three children were seriously injured in the firefight. ISAF forces broke contact with the insurgents, provided immediate medical attention and transported a 5 year old boy and a 6 year old girl to a nearby medical facility.

Successful Afghan National Army Operation

The Afghan national army's 2nd Kandak completed a successful mission at Forward Operating Base Sperwan Ghar, Jan. 13. Soldiers patrolled through villages near the FOB and checked compounds for insurgents and explosive devices that could harm civilians or coalition forces. "We received intelligence on enemy activity around the area," said ANA Capt. Shafi Feela. "We planned a two-day mission to sweep through the villages and find any enemies or enemy equipment." ANA and ISAF soldiers found a number of IEDs.

IJC Operational Update, Jan. 21

An Afghan-international security force searched a compound in the village of Qal-eh-ye-Bara, in the Qarah Bagh District of Ghazni province. During the operation the joint force responded to an imminent threat and killed insurgents and captured another. In Kandahar today, a joint security force stopped a vehicle near Maiwand village in the Maiwand District. While searching the vehicle and a nearby compound, the Afghan-international security force found three men, including one with fragmentation wounds he was unable to explain, who were attempting to bury a handheld radio.

An Afghan-international security force stopped a vehicle in an area east of the village of Hajji Ooddust, in the Panjway District of Kandahar yesterday.

IJC Operational Update, Jan. 19

An Afghan-international security force searched a compound outside the village of Baghak, in the Jeldek District of Zabul province last night and detained a pair of suspected militants while searching for a Taliban IED cell leader. In Ghazni last night, a joint security force searched a compound in a rural area west of the town of Nyazullah, in the Waghaz district. As the joint force entered a building in the compound, an insurgent threw a grenade and the Afghan-international security force returned fire killing an insurgent.

Afghan Security Forces Stabilize Kabul

Afghan national security forces effectively countered an insurgent attack in downtown Kabul today [18 January], and with ISAF support, are securing the area where several explosions and small-arms fire were reported this morning. "Today's attack by the Taliban in Kabul is yet another example of their brutality and contempt for the Afghan people," said Gen. Stanley McChrystal, ISAF commander. "Afghan national security forces effectively dealt with the situation and should be commended.

Operation Nets 3,500 Pounds of Drugs, Thousands in Cash

An Afghan-ISAF joint operation in the Panjawi district, Kandahar province discovered 3,500 pounds of marijuana and opium as well as about $48,000 (U.S.) (33,000 €) worth of Pakistani Rubies and $4,000 (U.S.) (3,000 €) in Afghan currency. In the course of the operation, a combined air assault and direct fire engagement, 10 insurgents were killed. No innocent Afghan civilians were injured in this operation. The joint force detained five men and protected 10 women. The joint force accounted for the money and turned it over to local authorities. The drugs were destroyed.

IJC Operational Update, Jan. 14

An Afghan-international security force searched a compound in the village of Gorgerah Ghar, in the Sabari District of Khowst and captured a Haqqani facilitator responsible for the delivery of weapons, IED's, mines and ammunition to other militant factions. The joint force also detained another insurgent. The assault force recovered a rocket propelled grenade, a hand grenade and machine gun ammunition. No shots were fired and no Afghan civilians were harmed in the operation. A local citizen saved lives yesterday when he directed an Afghan-international force to an IED in Kandahar.

IJC Operational Update, Jan. 13

An Afghan-international security force searched a compound south of the village of Nowabad, in the Mohammad Agha District last night and captured a Taliban facilitator responsible for the movement of explosives, weapons and IEDs. One insurgent was killed in the assault.

Large Improvised Explosive Device Cache Found

Afghan national army and ISAF forces conducting a combined patrol in Helmand province have discovered a significant IED cache in Helmand province. The patrol found nine jugs of homemade explosives totaling 250 pounds, 12 low- metal signature pressure plates, 17 radio-controlled IED initiators, five pounds of aluminum powder, 35 pounds of ammonium nitrate-based fertilizer, and 15 pounds of sugar. All explosives were rigged to explode with detonation cord and 200 rounds of machine gun ammunition. The combined unit cordoned the area and requested an EOD team to dispose of the cache.

IJC Refutes False Claim in Xinhua

ISAF forces did not open fire on civilians in Garmsir District as claimed in a report from the Chinese wire service Xinhua. As noted in our previous press release, during today's protest an insurgent sniper shot an Afghan official who was within Forward Operating Base Dehili. ISAF service members identified the insurgent sniper, shot and killed him. There were no other injuries or shots fired by ISAF forces. Local ISAF task force leadership in Garmsir District have been invited to participate with the District Governor and Chief of Police in a shura, Jan. 13.

IJC Operational Update, Jan. 12, 2010

In an early morning operation yesterday in the Now Zad area of Helmand province, ISAF forces witnessed a large number of insurgents near a safe house preparing ammunition and observed insurgent mortar teams moving equipment. An unmanned aerial vehicle launched one Hellfire missile killing 13 insurgents. There are no reports of civilian casualties or damage to residential compounds. In another operation yesterday, three insurgents with weapons were killed after they took up previously used firing positions in the Nad Ali district, Helmand.

Afghan and ISAF forces found a weapons cache in the Shindand District of Herat yesterday.

An Afghan-international security force searched a compound on the east side of Kandahar City and detained suspected militants. In Khowst last night, a joint security force captured a Haqqani facilitator and other militants responsible for bombing attacks, after searching a compound southeast of the village of Sherubawut, in the Nagir Shah Kot district. The security force recovered multiple weapons, including a machine gun, ammunition and hand grenades. ISAF Forces Capture Large Cache of Narcotics

ISAF air and ground elements coordinated early Wednesday morning to capture more than 6,000 pounds of illegal drugs in the Maiwand District. Shortly before 3 a.m., an ISAF Scout Weapons Team, consisting of two OH-58 Kiowa helicopters, observed a suspicious vehicle attempting to evade them. The SWT maintained visual contact with the fleeing vehicle while relaying the information to nearby soldiers. As the soldiers moved to intercept the truck it stopped and both occupants fled to nearby cover.
