Operation Moshtarak Update for Feb. 17

Yesterday, Gov. Gulab Mangal travelled to Marjah to observe Operation Moshtarak. During his visit an Afghan flag was raised over the town, and the governor met with some of the combined-force service members who are conducting counter-insurgent operations. Subsequently, the governor travelled to Camp Bastion to visit with injured civilians from Marjah. He was accompanied by Deputy District Governor Haji Zahir, three Marjah elders and members of the local Afghan media. Mangal held a shura yesterday to discuss the security situation in Nad-e Ali to present his plans for the way ahead.

IJC Operational Update, Feb. 17

An Afghan-international security force searched a compound in the village of Alozi, in the Pul-e Alam District of Logar province after intelligence information indicated militant activity. While searching the compound the joint force captured a Taliban sub-commander, responsible for the movement of weapons and leading IED attacks against Afghan and coalition troops. In Nimroz province last night, a joint security force searched a compound outside the village of Chah Mowia, in the Kash Rod District after intelligence discovered militant activity.

Operation Moshtarak Update for February 16

The military phase of Operation Moshtarak remains on track. The insurgents are tactically adept, have resilience and are cunning, so continued tactical patience on the part of the combined force is important. Mining is significant in areas, and the combined force must be very deliberate in its movement in order to minimize local Afghan and combined force casualties. On the ground, the conduct of Operation Moshtarak is visibly demonstrating that the force has changed the way it operates and that it is working with and for the people of Afghanistan.

IJC Operational Update Feb. 16

An Afghan-international force interdicted three vehicles in three separate engagements, resulting in more than 10 militants killed while pursuing a Taliban commander in Helmand province yesterday. The joint force was sent to a rural area in the Washir District after intelligence information revealed militants were in several vehicles. One of the vehicles drove away and attempted to elude the assault force. As the combined force attempted to stop it, weapons were pointed at the coalition force through the open car windows.

Operation Moshtarak Update for Feb. 15

The clearing phase of operation Moshtarak continued yesterday. The combined force continues to face sporadic fire fights. The combined forces have incurred casualties. A press conference held yesterday in Lashkar Gah included General Abdul Rahim Wardak, minister of Defense; Mohammed Hanif Atmar, minister of Interior; Mohammed Gulab Mangal, governor of Helmand province; Brig. Gen. Sher Mohammad Zazai, ANA 205 Corps commander; and General Stanley McChrystal, ISAF commander. Gen.

IJC Operational Update, Feb. 12

An Afghan-international security force stopped an individual in Kandahar's Panjwayee district near Chalghur after intelligence information indicated militant activity and detained him for further questioning. In Logar last night, a joint security force searched a compound near the town of Kandwalah, in the Mohammad Agha district after intelligence information indicated militant activity.

IJC Operational Update, Feb. 11

An Afghan-international joint force searched a compound outside the village of Robat, in the Wali Mohammad Shaheed District of Ghazni province after intelligence information indicated militant activity. During the search the combined force captured a Taliban commander, with connections to several other militant network leaders, and another suspected insurgent. An Afghan-international joint force stopped a vehicle in north Helmand's Washer District near Shah Mirza Kariz after intelligence information indicated insurgent activity.

IJC Operational Update, Feb. 10

An Afghan-international security force searched a compound outside the village of Ya qubi, in the Sabari District of Khowst province, last night after intelligence information confirmed militant activity. During the search the combined force captured a Haqqani sub-commander responsible for coordinating attacks on Afghan and coalition forces. He is also accused of arranging delivery of weapons to other Haqqani networks.

ANA Destroys 16 Rockets, One Mortar Round

The Afghan National Army, supported by an international security patrol, destroyed 16 rockets and one mortar round in Kandahar province, Feb. 7-8. The ANA were conducting a patrol near Darivshan village when they received a tip from an Afghan civilian informing the patrol of a weapons cache.
