Anti-Gun Extremists Will Be Coming In Force
By Harold Hutchison

On 14 December, a crazed gunman forced his way into Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut. Twenty innocent children were killed, along with seven adults in a horrific American tragedy. Grief ripped across the entire country, as all Americans tried to make sense of a horribly senseless act.

Sadly, within minutes, ghoulish anti-gun extremists in the media, from Hollywood, activists, and politicians began talking gun control – long before any of the facts were in. The outcry was notable, ranging from Parks and Recreation star Rashida Jones to CNN host Piers Morgan. Most forgot to mention that Connecticut has some of the toughest gun laws in the country.

Some even tout this as a “tipping point” in favor of gun control. Whether that is true completely depends on what Second Amendment activists do now. Dianne Feinstein, author of the 1994 gun ban, is pushing for a new one that will “ban the sale, the transfer, the transportation and the possession” of the semi-autos you love to shoot, and do the same to magazines that hold more than ten rounds.

Congressman Jerrold Nadler (D-NY) was one of the most bombastic, saying, “I think we will be there if the president exploits it, and otherwise we’ll go on to the next [incident].”

“Going there” means pushing for new gun bans – and the anti gunner’s sights were already set on re-enacting the 1994 Clinton gun ban, but putting the ban on legislative steroids. While the 1994 ban had to have a sunset provision to get passage by a very slim majority back then, this time, there will be no sunset. That is not the worst of it.

So folks, we are fighting for the life of our Second Amendment rights. The anti-gunners will deny it, but do not believe their denials. Beware of their rhetoric.

Here is what the anti-gunners will not mention as they try to exploit this horrific tragedy to take away your Second Amendment rights: Anti-gunners have always used half-truths – if not outright lies – to push their agenda. When they mix it with raw emotion like what existed after the Columbine shooting, it will get tough. With 20 dead first-graders and six heroic teachers, the high emotion is blinding.

The anti-gunners will not mention that Connecticut defeated legislation, SB452, which would have made it easier to institutionalize a person who is believed likely to cause harm to himself/herself or others. The reason? The ACLU and others claimed it would “infringe on patients' privacy rights by expanding [the circle of] who can medicate individuals without their consent.” Never mind that it could save lives, or that columnist Mona Charen reported that many who are forcibly medicated admit later on that it was the right call to make at the time.

Nor will they mention how, during the Clackamas Town Center shooting, the shooting was not stopped by a cop. The shooter’s rampage was stopped when he realized that a former security guard, who had a concealed carry permit, was aiming a gun of his own at him. “I know after he saw me I think the last shot he fired was the one he used on himself,” Nick Meli told NewsChannel 8 in Portland, Oregon.

They will hide the fact that in many of the places where mass shootings happen, guns are prohibited. They will ignore the fact that Connecticut already had a semi-auto ban and major restrictions on gun rights. They will also ignore the fact that there were clear points where someone with a gun could have stopped the shooter long before the body count got as high as it did. Imagine if the principal and guidance counsel who charged the shooter had a subcompact Glock instead of just their bare hands.

The first step is to join the NRA if you have not done so already. Then, go to nraila.org and subscribe to their legislative alerts at https://nraila.org/get-involved-locally/secure/stay-informed.aspx to be ready. Find out who your Congressman and Senators are – and contact them and urge them to oppose any new gun laws.

Is the NRA perfect? No, but now, more than ever, a united front is essential. In England and Australia, gun owners did not unite early on, and it cost them, as very strict gun bans got passed. Make sure you are a volunteer with the NRA-ILA – you can sign up at https://nraila.org/get-involved-locally/forms/secure/frontlines.aspx and decide your level of involvement.

We need our friends in Congress to know we are behind them, and we need those who would scapegoat us to know that they face an army of volunteer who will work to replace them unless they change course. The anti-gunners have been cowed from past defeats we have inflicted upon them in 1994, 2000, 2002, and even 2004. After this, we need to restore that fear.

The next step is to take on the anti-gunners in the media. Contact local journalists, and present the facts to the reporters. Be polite, but firm, when you correct the misrepresentations. Many reporters have already bought into some stereotypes – don’t feed into them. If you can break the stereotypes, and show the anti-gunners are wrong about that, you can convince the journalist to at least give you a fair hearing.

Second, we need to come up with alternatives to gun control. In many of these cases, these shootings were carried out by people who apparently had severe mental health issues and prescription psychological drugs affected their reality. Get educated on these issues, and support what solutions are needed to get mentally disturbed people the help they need before they snap.

Third, you need to educate and inform your family and friends about the issues. The more people you convince, the stronger our voice will be at the polls and during the upcoming debate. Win them over – and get them involved as well. This is a fight that will affect your ability to protect them – make sure they know it. Also keep an eye on what your children are being taught in school – don’t let them be exploited to take away your Second Amendment rights.

The coming legislative battles and the 2013 and 2014 elections will be for all the marbles. If Feinstein, Nadler, and the rest of the gun-grabbers win, whatever gun ban passes will be something we could be stuck with. It took years for Heller and McDonald to reach the Supreme Court, and by then, we could see an anti-gun Supreme Court.

Feinstein said, “If I could have gotten 51 votes in the Senate of the United States for an outright ban, picking up every one of them . . . Mr. and Mrs. America, turn 'em all in, I would have done it. I could not do that. The votes weren't here,” on 60 Minutes in 1995. Let her know that the votes still will not be there in 2013.
