Companies with Al-Qaeda, Taliban Ties Got Contracts
By Harold Hutchison

The Army has ignored warnings that as many as 43 companies or individuals with ties to al-Qaeda or the Taliban have received contracts in Afghanistan. The Special Inspector General for Afghan Reconstruction has flagged them for “providing material support to the insurgency in Afghanistan.”

The recommendations, however, have been ignored, due to concerns that “suspension or debarment of these individuals and companies would be a violation of their due process rights if based on classified information or if based on findings by the Department of Commerce,” according to the report by John Sopko, SIGAR’s lead inspector.

In addition, two dozen companies and individuals were flagged for defrauding the United States out of over $5.3 million.
