Former British Prime Minister Dies
By Harold Hutchison

Margaret Thatcher, the British Prime Minister whose resolve not only liberated the Falkland Islands in 1982, but also helped take down the Soviet Union, died today in London. The former prime minister was 87.

Thatcher served as Prime Minister from 1979 to 1990, during which time she helped push the United Kingdom back onto the stage as a world power. In 1982, when the Falkland Islands were invaded, Thatcher made the decision to liberate them. The Falklands War lasted for two months, and despite naval and ground losses, British forces eventually compelled Argentinean forces to surrender.

After resigning as Prime Minister in 1990, Thatcher became a Baroness and served in the House of Lords. She also spoke out against Serbian “ethnic cleansing” in 1992, and often continued to advise the Conservative Party’s leaders.
