Customs Ruins Man’s Living By Trashing Rare Flutes
By Harold Hutchison

As many as eleven rare Berber flutes were destroyed by United States Customs, who mistakenly identified them as bamboo chutes. The action has potentially ruined the career of a famous flutist.

Boujemaa Razgui, a Moroccan flute player, had been en route to Boston, where he regularly performed, via John F. Kennedy Airport in New York City. Razgui was never contacted about the flutes, which were intercepted in Customs. He discovered them missing when he was in Boston.

Razgui now considers himself unemployed as a result of the destruction of his flutes, which were a mixture of two traditional types from Morocco known as nays and kawalas.
