Female Cop Latest in String of Murdered Afghan Women
By Harold Hutchison
A top cop in Afghanistan became the latest prominent woman in that country to be murdered. The killing of Sub-Inspector Negar comes less than three months after her predecessor was also murder.
Negar, who had two children, was a police officer before the Taliban took power. She had returned to law enforcement after the Taliban were removed, but had been receiving phone threats from the group, which banned women from working while they were in power. Her son, also a police officer, vowed to find the killers and bring them to justice.
Since August, a female Afghan senator and her 8-year-old daughter have been killed, as was author Sushmita Banerjee, whose book detailed the Taliban’s oppression of women.
