Is the Terminator Joining the Army?
By Harold Hutchison
Could the Army’s new ground troops be more along the lines of Terminators or Cylons? That prospect is emerging as the military is considering replacing human troops with robots.
According to a report by DefenseNews.com, the Army, which is facing cutbacks, is considering the use of robots and other unmanned systems to replace grunts on the front lines. The replacement is being considered as one way to keep up combat power while drawing down the number of soldiers in a brigade by as much as 25 percent. The Army is already carrying out a reduction in the number of active combat brigade from 45 to 33.
So, will the new robots be saying, “By your command,” or will they be saying, “I’ll be back,” to our troops?
