In an effort to defend a new policy against proselytizing from criticism, the Obama Administration has used definitions that appear to be contradictory with those in the dictionary. The policy has come under fire from numerous quarters after reports indicated a vehement critic of some Christian denominations was meeting with officials at the Pentagon.
Dictionary.com defines the word “evangelize” to mean “to preach the gospel to” while the definition for proselytize means “to convert or attempt to convert.” The Family Research Council, which helped reveal the Pentagon’s consultation with Michael Weinstein, who has made incendiary comments regarding Christians in the military.
In an article at the Huffington Post, Weinstein described Christians like retired Lieutenant General Jerry Boykin as “fundamentalist Christian monsters of human degradation, marginalization, humiliation and tyranny.” Weinstein also endorsed the left-wing extremist organization Southern Poverty Law Center in the article.
An online petition started by the Family Research Council has garnered over 120,000 signatures urging Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel to back down from the policy.
