Second to be Awarded for Battle of Ganjgal
By Harold Hutchison
Captain William Swenson, United States Army, fought at the side of Marine Corporal Dakota Meyer during the Battle of Ganjgal, will receive the Medal of Honor next month. Swenson, whose nomination was controversial due to a delay, is scheduled to be presented the medal on 15 October.
Swenson and Meyer had been mentoring Afghan National Army and Afghan National Police members when their force was attacked by over 150 Taliban. Meyer and Swenson repeatedly went back into the line of fire to rescue fallen American and Afghan personnel.
Meyer received the Medal of Honor in 2011. After the battle, Swenson was critical of the actions of his superiors.
