Death Toll Climbs as Truce Fails
By Harold Hutchison
Violent protests continued to rage in Kiev as a “truce” promoted by Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych collapsed. Protesters armed with firebombs faced off with policemen armed with automatic weapons.
According to reports by VOA News, at least 70 people have died and over 500 have been wounded. White House spokesman Jay Carney urged the ant-government protestors to “express themselves peacefully” while condemning “images of Ukrainian security forces firing automatic weapons on their own people.”
Shortly after the truce, the commander of the Ukrainian Army was fired. The protests began after Yanukovych backed out of a trade deal with the European Union in favor of more economic ad from Russia.
