The Ivory Coast seemed to be teetering on the brink of a civil war as supporters of the two contenders for the presidency of that county continued fighting.
Thousands of youths were waiting to sign up for a militia loyal to Laurent Gbagbo, the incumbent widely believed to have lost an election four months ago. The organization, The Young Patriots, has been linked to attacks on UN peacekeepers and civilians.
Meanwhile, forces loyal to the presumed winner, Alassane Ouattara, captured a fifth town in the western part of the country. The Ivory Coast is the world's largest producer of cocoa.
