Over 240 Marines Died in Barracks Bombing
By Harold Hutchison
The new Iranian President’s nominee as Defense Minister has ties to the 1983 bombing of the Marine barracks in Lebanon. Hassan Rowani, widely portrayed as a moderate, made the nomination earlier this week.
The 1983 bombing left 241 Marines dead, and prompted the United States to pull out of Lebanon. Hussein Deghahn has a long track record in the Iranian Revolutionary Guards Corps.
The nomination of Dehghan is not the only controversial pick in the new Iranian cabinet. Rowani’s appointee to be Iran’s foreign minister is a Holocaust denier. Rowani himself has labeled Israel a “wound” in the Middle East.
