Civil Rights Charges Eyed

Despite an FBI report indicating that there was no racial motivation on the part of George Zimmerman, Attorney General Eric Holder and the Justice Department are pursuing a civil rights investigation into the 2012 incident in which Zimmerman shot 17-year-old Trayvon Martin. A jury acquitted Zimmerman of all charges this past Saturday.
According to the FBI report, the lead investigator on the case, Chris Serino, said that Zimmerman’s actions prior to the shooting were “not based on Martin’s skin color, rather on his attire, the total circumstances of the encounter and the previous burglary suspects in the community.”
The federal investigation comes after demands from the NAACP, the New Black Panther Party, and other groups. The verdict lead to a number of protests, with some violence breaking out in Oakland, California.
