Dianne Feinstein Outlines Her Exploitative Gun Grab
By Harold Hutchison
HERE IT COMES
In 1995, Dianne Feinstein told 60 Minutes with regards to certain semi-automatic firearms, “If I could have gotten 51 votes in the Senate of the United States for an outright ban, picking up every one of them—Mr. and Mrs. America, turn them all in—I would have done it.” Keep that statement in mind when you look at the details of the gun grab she is proposing.
Her approach is very pernicious – not only does it put the 1994 semi-auto ban she authored on steroids, it is also meant to scapegoat anyone who owns a semi-auto that has any real military feature for the actions of nutcases and criminals. The expanded ban covers not just the firearms banned in 1994, but it also covers many of the “post-ban” firearms as well – and may even cover typical handguns as well.
The old saying is that the devil is in the details – and that is very true with this bill. Because when one reads what Feinstein has been aching to do for years, it is a potential living hell for law-abiding gun owners, and it will do precious little to stop the next mass shooting. And what do you think will happen after the next mass shooting after this bill passes? She’ll be back again!
WANTED FOR A LONG TIME
The perps of the mass shootings in Tucson, Aurora, and Newtown all had serious mental health issues – and many of them were exhibiting signs that left many people wondering what to do. Yet Dianne Feinstein is ignoring that issue – even as many people are recognizing the need to do so. There have also been documented instances where concealed carry permit holders have been able to greatly lower the body count from mass shootings. But Dianne Feinstein, even though she had a carry permit at one point, isn’t pursuing this.
Instead, Feinstein’s bill summary reads like an anti-gunner’s wish list. In addition to the gun ban, there is a ban on normal-capacity magazines. Whether it is you AR-15, your Glock, or your Beretta 92, you get limited to ten rounds max. But the bill goes even further than that. In 2009, Feinstein said that she wasn’t going to push gun control because of the “culture war” it would start. Ominously, she said, “I’ll pick the time and the place, no question about it.”
The emotion and hysteria surrounding the murder of 20 innocent schoolchildren and six adults at Shady Hook Elementary School was the time and place she chose. It is a cynical exploitation of a tragedy. Her goal: Try again for the gun-grab she wanted all along.
BEYOND THE GUN GRAB
In 1994, grandfathered guns were largely ignored. Feinstein didn’t have the votes. This time, she will put any grandfathered semi-auto under the National Firearms Act of 1934. For all intents and purposes, Feinstein intends to treat owners of semi-autos worse than the people who are likely to carry out mass shootings like Newtown. The fact that many had nothing to do with the shooting is irrelevant.
The new restrictions would involve registration of any semi-auto deemed to be an “assault weapon” by the new law. This is one of the holy grails of anti-gunners – not because it would solve crimes, but because it makes the eventual confiscation (now being couched as a “mandatory buy-back”) of the guns easier.
Don’t just take our word for it. Look at what happened in England and Australia when registration failed to prevent mass shootings there. The anti-gunners took the guns from the law-abiding. Closer to home, registration in New York City was also used to justify a ban. The NRA reported the chilling details: “The New York City Police Department (NYPD) had notified the 2,340 New Yorkers who had been licensed earlier to possess semi-automatic rifles and shotguns that any of those licensed firearms that were covered by the ban had to be surrendered, rendered inoperable or taken out of the city. The recipients of the notification were directed to send back a sworn statement indicating what had been done with those firearms.”
The NYPD was even planning “spot checks” just to be sure.
TREATING LAW-ABIDING GUN OWNERS LIKE CRIMINALS
The NFA restrictions go beyond registration. Law-abiding gun owners will be given a “guilty until proven innocent” treatment over the semi-autos they already have. You’ll have to submit a photograph and fingerprints to the government. You will be the subject of a background check. You will be required to get permission from the ATF to take the guns across state lines if you move.
But to even own the guns, you will have to get a signature from the chief law enforcement officer of your city or country. Good luck getting that in some parts of the country, where the police chiefs are appointed by Michael Bloomberg’s gun-grabbing allies at Mayors Against Illegal Guns! If you thought the five-day waiting period that the Brady Bunch pushed through in 1993 was bad – you ain’t seen nothing yet!
We can no longer kid ourselves about what Dianne Feinstein and her gun-grabbing cohorts are up to. Rather than address the real problems surrounding mass shootings and crime, which would involve the tough tasks of addressing mental health care access and the disintegration of families in certain parts of the country, they want to scapegoat law-abiding gun owners and punish them for the failures of allegedly “progressive” social policies.
Don’t let them do that. Get involved. Go to http://membership.nrahq.org/ to join the NRA. Then go to https://www.nraila.org/get-involved-locally/forms/secure/frontlines.aspx to become part of NRA-ILA’s Frontlines to help fight Feinstein’s gun grab.
In her own words, here is the summary of what Dianne Feinstein wants to do:
Bans the sale, transfer, importation, or manufacturing of:
• 120 specifically-named firearms
• Certain other semiautomatic rifles, handguns, shotguns that can accept a
detachable magazine and have one military characteristic
• Semiautomatic rifles and handguns with a fixed magazine that can accept
more than 10 rounds
Strengthens the 1994 Assault Weapons Ban and various state bans by:
• Moving from a 2-characteristic test to a 1-characteristic test
• Eliminating the easy-to-remove bayonet mounts and flash suppressors from
the characteristics test
• Banning firearms with “thumbhole stocks” and “bullet buttons” to address
attempts to “work around” prior bans
Bans large-capacity ammunition feeding devices capable of accepting more than 10 rounds.
Protects legitimate hunters and the rights of existing gun owners by:
• Grandfathering weapons legally possessed on the date of enactment
• Exempting over 900 specifically-named weapons used for hunting or
sporting purposes and
• Exempting antique, manually-operated, and permanently disabled weapons
Requires that grandfathered weapons be registered under the National Firearms Act, to include:
o Background check of owner and any transferee;
o Type and serial number of the firearm;
o Positive identification, including photograph and fingerprint;
o Certification from local law enforcement of identity and that
possession would not violate State or local law; and
o Dedicated funding for ATF to implement registration
