Philippines Claim Base Being Built
By Harold Hutchison
A disputed reef in the South China Sea could become the site of a ChiCom base – and construction may already be in progress. The development comes as a continuing territorial dispute has been heating up between China and the Philippines.
According to a report by VOA News, the Philippine government has aerial photos of concrete blocks on the disputed reef, where ChiCom and Philippine vessels have had some tense standoffs. The ChiComs have been accused of using surveillance vessels and other ships to occupy the disputed reef.
Three other ASEAN countries aside from the Philippines have territorial disputes with the ChiComs in the South China Sea. The ChiComs have been trying to play divide-and-conquer by holding one-on-one talks with the various countries that have claims in the region.
