On behalf of the NRA Institute for Legislative Action, please accept my best wishes to you and your family for the holiday season and the New Year ahead.
As an NRA member, you're among just 5% of gun owners nationwide who are taking an active role in protecting and defending our Second Amendment Right to Keep and Bear Arms.
And because of this leadership role you've chosen to play in shaping the future of freedom, I wanted to bring you up-to-date on just a few of the battles that NRA-ILA has fought and won during 2011.
In the U.S. Congress, we passed more than a dozen provisions to prohibit the use of your tax dollars for gun registration... to prohibit the release of sensitive gun trace information to anti-gun mayors and lawyers... to prevent the destruction of surplus military firearms that are prized by collectors... and much more.
In the state legislatures, we enacted more than a dozen new pro-freedom laws, including Right-to-Carry in the state of Wisconsin, leaving Illinois as the only state in the union where everyday citizens are denied their right to self-defense.
In our nation's courtrooms -- from local courts all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court -- we've stood firm against gun-ban lawyers, struck down bad laws, demanded enforcement of good laws, and taken legal action on behalf of law-abiding gun owners who've been victimized by anti-gun government officials.
And we've made it possible for tens of millions of Americans who aren't members of the NRA to hear and read our story -- to learn the real truth about our Second Amendment freedoms -- though radio, T.V., and newspaper interviews with NRA-ILA staff, online outreach efforts, university and student programs, personal appearances at special events, and much more.
But now it's time to set our sights on the future -- on the year 2012, and what we must achieve in order to keep our Second Amendment rights intact in the coming months and especially in the November elections.
I think you'll agree: This country and the rights we cherish cannot withstand four more years of President Barack Obama imposing his anti-freedom values on the American people.
We cannot sit back and give President Obama four more years to stack the U.S. Supreme Court with a gun-ban majority -- especially since four of the nine justices already believe that the Second Amendment does not guarantee an individual right to own a firearm... or defend our homes and families.
Nor can we accept more guns being shipped to Mexican drug lords. Nor can we accept four more years of an administration that has dropped federal prosecution of gun criminals to the lowest level in more than a decade.
And that's why I'm reaching out to you and other NRA members today, and asking you to take an active role in our efforts in 2012 -- by making a special contribution to NRA-ILA of $20, $30, $50, $100 or any other amount you can afford.
By supporting NRA-ILA over and above your regular NRA membership commitment, you'll be playing a leadership role in NRA-ILA's election-year efforts.
With your help today, we will recruit thousands of campaign volunteers to fight for candidates who respect our rights. In turn, those volunteers will make hundreds of thousands of phone calls and help us distribute millions of campaign flyers, stretching your contributions to the maximum.
With your help, we will pay for advertisements on Fox News, ESPN, and other stations and networks that gun owners are likely to watch.
We will identify likely gun rights supporters based on "microtargeting" data that can help us reach the maximum number of pro-freedom voters for the dollars we spend.
We will put people on the ground in key states, two to three months before Election Day, to assist with voter registration and turnout efforts.
And we'll make sure that tens of millions of Americans who visit gun stores, ranges, and gun shows next year will see and hear our NRA-ILA message and understand the power and importance of their vote in November of next year.
The bottom line is, I'm planning the most massive pro-Second Amendment voter registration and turnout effort that this country has ever seen. Because if we don't win this election, our rights may not survive until the next one.
But this effort must begin with NRA members like you who are willing to go the extra mile and contribute to NRA-ILA over and above your regular NRA membership support.
With American freedom on the ropes like never before in our lifetimes, we have a more important role to play in this election than in any other we've ever faced. And by fighting to protect, strengthen and restore our firearm rights in this election, we will preserve all the freedoms we cherish.
And there's no better way for you to make your personal mark on the upcoming elections -- and save freedom -- than through your participation in the NRA Institute for Legislative Action in 2012.
I'd be extremely grateful for your contribution today in any amount you can afford -- and for the opportunity to work with you in 2012 to preserve America's unique freedoms.
