Lost in the horror of our twin nightmares - Oregon's Clackamas Town Center shootings (Dec. 11) and Connecticut's Newtown elementary school massacre (Dec. 14) is that armed intervention -at both shootings- halted MORE slaughter of innocents and prompted both killers to commit suicide.
Less than 72 hours before the Sandy Hook Elementary School Massacre Nick Meli was just one of 10,000 Oregon Christmas shoppers plying the busy Clackamas Town Center Mall, a little SE of Portland, Oregon on Dec 11 when he heard shots close by in the mall's packed food court.
He pulled his legal "concealed carry" Glock 22 and held the front aiming post on the head of "active shooter" Jacob Roberts.
"I know after he saw me I think the last shot he fired was the one he used on himself," said Meli.
Minutes after the two 22 year olds locked eyes the killer-Roberts- went to a stairwell and shot himself. (He had just killed two and wounded another.) When a bystander stepped in the "sight picture" Meli chose not to pull his trigger but his mere intervention probably prevented more killing of innocents.
Less than than 72 hours later "active shooter" Adam Lanzawas busy killing kids in the second classroom at Sandy Hook Elementary but abruptly stopped, according to witnesses, when he heard the loud rumble of approaching police boots in the hallway. He had hundreds of bullets left when he used one of them to take his own life. (He had just killed 20 children and seven adults.)
Speaking on ABC’s “This Week,” Connecticut Gov. Dannel P. Malloy said Lanza shot himself as police entered the building.
“We surmise that it was during the second classroom episode that he heard responders coming and apparently at that, decided to take his own life,” Malloy said.
The story of the Meli encounter with the Clackamas mall killer was covered by only one Portland, Oregon TV Station, Chanel 8, and never mentioned by "The Oregonian" the state's biggest paper, based in Portland.
