For the first time in the commercial silencer industry’s 103 year history, individual manufacturers, distributors, dealers, and members of the public are formally banding together to collectively advocate for the silencer industry. They are doing so under the banner of the American Silencer Association (ASA), a non-profit trade association whose mission is “to further the pursuit of education, public relations, legislation, hunting applications, and military applications for the silencer industry”. The parent companies responsible for the incorporation of the ASA are Advanced Armament Corp., Gemtech, and Silencerco/SWR. While they are fierce competitors in the marketplace, all three companies recognize the necessity of creating a single voice to educate the public and to enhance their ability to advocate for silencer rights. To most effectively do so, the ASA will immediately seek to recruit all remaining silencer manufacturers into the organization in order to represent the entire silencer industry with a single voice.
Although commonly referred to as silencers, they are perhaps more accurately called suppressors, as they do not truly silence a host firearm. Instead, they simply reduce the overall sound signature by trapping the expanding gasses and allowing them to slowly cool, in a similar fashion to car mufflers. Their muffling capabilities intrinsically make them a hearing protection device for both the shooter and those around them. For this reason, among others, states such as Michigan, Missouri, and Washington reformed their civilian ownership laws in 2011, bringing the current number of states that allow private possession to 39.
With widespread support from the NRA, sporting goods distributors, and Class 3 dealers, the ASA is confident that it will be able to vastly improve the regulatory and business environments of the silencer industry in both the short and long term.
