Iraqi Security Forces arrested three suspected leaders within their respective al-Qaeda in Iraq (AQI) cells, as well as three suspected criminal associates, during three joint security operations conducted today in Baghdad and Diyala Provinces.
In Baqubah, located northeast of Baghdad, Iraqi Police and U.S. advisors searched two buildings for a suspected AQI leader for the Tarmiyah area.
Iraqi Police identified and arrested the suspected AQI leader, who allegedly assists in acquiring suicide vests and coordinating suicide attacks in the region. A suspected associate of the AQI leader was also arrested without incident.
During a second security operation conducted in southern Baghdad, ISF and U.S. advisors searched a residential building for an alleged AQI leader of an improvised explosive cell for the Rusafa-Karkh area.
The AQI leader is also suspected of executing Iraqi civilians and staging deadly attacks against security forces in the region.
Evidence collected at the scene led ISF to identify and arrest the suspected AQI leader, along with two suspected criminal accomplices.
A third operation conducted by ISF and U.S. advisors near Abu Ghraib, located west of Baghdad, resulted in the arrest of a suspected AQI member who leads communications and logistics efforts for the terrorist group within the Anbar area.
Following a search of several buildings, ISF identified and arrested an associate of the AQI leader without incident.
