While multiple VA hospitals are now found to have had secret waiting lists to hide the fact that veterans were not receiving timely medical care, the federal government apparently does have the time and energy to make giving Private Bradley Manning, convicted of leaking tens of thousands of documents to Wikileaks, a sex change operation, a priority.
According to an editorial in Investor’s Business Daily, the DOD is planning to transfer Manning to the Federal Bureau of Prisons, which would cover the operation. Manning claims to actually be a female, and has been asking to live as a woman. Manning was sentenced to serve 35 years in prison after being convicted in a court martial on charges of aiding the enemy and espionage. The treatment for Manning’s condition could require multiple operations, with the total treatment for “transition” costing over $100,000.
The scandal surrounding the secret waiting lists began when news of a secret waiting list at a VA hospital in Phoenix, Arizona that may have lead to the deaths of 40 veterans broke. At least six other VA hospitals have also now admitted to using similar lists, one of which had over 200 veterans on it.
Secretary of Veterans Affairs Eric Shinseki has been resisting calls from the American Legion to step down in the wake of the scandal. A Department of Defense spokesman was quoted in the Investor’s Business Daily editorial as saying that no decision had been made yet.
Should Bradley Manning receive his sex change operation while America’s vets languish on secret waiting list?
