Dempsey Lays Out Plans for Syria
By Harold Hutchison

General Martin Dempsey, the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, has detailed five options for intervention in Syria in a letter to Congress. This follows up on testimony in front of the Senate Armed Services Committee.

The options, ranging from an “advise, assist, and training” role to operations to seize chemical weapons in the country, are all intended to aid opposition forces and place more pressure on the regime of Bashir al-Assad.

Dempsey had earlier refused to discuss options, prompting Senator John McCain (R-AZ) to place a hold on Dempsey’s nomination for a second term as Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. McCain removed the hold after the letter was released.
