Withdrawal of HH-60 Pave Hawks Leaves Brits in Lurch
By Harold Hutchison

The withdrawal of HH-60 Pave Hawk combat search-and-rescue helicopters is now placing British troops at greater risk. The withdrawn choppers are similar to one that crashed in the United Kingdom last week, killing a four-person crew.

According to a report by the London Daily Mail, the withdrawn choppers are equipped with winches that assist in removing casualties from minefields. British forces in Afghanistan turned to Air Force Pave Hawks after a 2006 minefield rescue left a British soldier dead.

British forces are likely to resort to the use of Westland Lynx helicopters. Those helicopters, though, have been limited in hot weather and the high altitudes in Afghanistan.
