Amash Amendment Defeated on 217-205 Vote
By Harold Hutchison

An amendment to curtail some NSA surveillance programs was defeated by a 217-205 vote. Sponsored by Representatives Justin Amash (R-MI), the amendment would have halted some of the NSA’s collection of telephone metadata. The vote came on the Defense Appropriations bill for the upcoming fiscal year, which passed by a 319-105 vote.

The vote on the amendment was split on both sides – 134 Republicans voted against the amendment along with 83 Democrats, while 111 Democrats and 94 Republicans voted for the Amendment.

The legislation has drawn a veto threat from the Obama Administration, which claims that despite a $5.1 billion cut from the previous year’s finding, the legislation would force cuts in other priorities.
