Action Comes Days After News of Obama Push for U.S. Nuke Cuts Emerges

North Korea carried out a third nuclear test on 12 February, its third test of a nuclear device. According to multiple media reports, the test was said to be larger than the first two tests, conducted in 2006 and 2009.

The test was reported the same day that Barack Obama was to give his State of the Union address. The test also occurred less than two days after The Hill reported that the Obama Administration was planning to push a reduction of the U.S. nuclear arsenal by one-third.

“This is a highly provocative act that, following its Dec. 12 ballistic missile launch, undermines regional stability, violates North Korea’s obligations under numerous United Nations Security Council resolutions, contravenes its commitments under the Sept. 19, 2005, Joint Statement of the Six-Party Talks and increases the risk of proliferation,” Obama said in a written statement.

In New York, the UN Security Council has condemned North Korea’s nuclear test.
