THE START OF A CRISIS

Recently, a chain e-mail surrounding a proposal by a Vermont State Representative by the name of Fred Maslack has been making the rounds. This e-mail resurrected a story that will be ten years old later this year. The idea: Make non-gun owners in the state of Vermont register with the state and pay a $500 fee.

The weapon allegedly used by Nidal Malik Hasan in the Fort Hood shooting has been in the headlines before. But the story begins long before it hit the headlines. In fact, the story of the Five-seveN starts in 1990.

LONG HISTORY

If there is a single force that is in action 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year, it is the United States Coast Guard. It not only is on call 24/7, but it is also tasked with a wide variety of missions that take it from the fresh and salt waters of the United States to the front lines of America’s wars.

Once again, the “Wild Bunch” gathered in the high country of Colorado, near the small town of Maybelle. Some came to hunt, some to get the hell out of the too-many-people urban areas, but all participated in discussing how to postpone the demise of Western civilization in general, and that of our great Republic in particular for the year. As well as evaluate and discuss new gear, work out new small arms, generally hang out and maybe just maybe harvest an elk or two.

One of the greatest pitfalls for law enforcement officers is the crossfire, or taking positions that put them in the line of fire of other officers. Officers with only a few years on the job have done it hundreds of times. We all have, but avoiding crossfire takes only a little forethought, along with some roll-call training in order to put it into practice.

Brute force, or as trainer Tom Benge says, “cubic inches” can make a big difference in a fight. But if your assailant is more versed in martial arts than you or the fight is blade- or projectile-based, you may be making a trip to the E.R. or worse. However, if your assailant can’s see you, he or she will have a much more difficult time harming you, especially if you don’t remain in the same place.
