Aung San Suu Kyi Seeks Re-instatement of Opposition Party

Burmese opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi appeared in Burma's High Court Tuesday to file an affidavit seeking the legal reinstatement of her political party.

It was the pro-democracy figure's first trip to downtown Rangoon since her release Saturday after seven years of house arrest.

Since then she has appeared daily at the headquarters of her National League for Democracy, which was officially dissolved after deciding to boycott this month's national elections, in which she was barred from being a candidate.

Nigeria Reports Suspected Iranian Arms Shipment to UN

Nigeria has reported to the United Nations that it seized an alleged Iranian arms shipment last month.

Nigerian Foreign Minister Odein Ajumogobia said Monday his government informed the U.N. Security Council of the shipment of rockets and other weapons that were intercepted by Nigerian security forces in Lagos. Officials are not sure of the intended destination of the weapons.

United Nations sanctions prohibit Tehran from shipping weapons abroad.

Large quantity of narcotics seized by joint security force

Afghan National Security and International Security Assistance Forces seized a large quantity of narcotics in Chakhansur district, Nimroz province, Nov. 13.

Multiple intelligence sources and tips from local citizens led the joint security force to suspected drug infiltration routes in Nimroz and Helmand provinces. During the course of the operation, the joint security force stopped several vehicles that were suspected of smuggling narcotics.

Capture of Taliban IED attack leader confirmed

The International Security Assistance Force confirmed the capture of a Taliban leader operating in Zurmat district of Paktiya province during an overnight operation in the province Nov. 14.

The targeted individual coordinated and conducted indiscriminate improvised explosive device attacks and facilitated weapons for fighters under his command.

Indiscriminate violence, such as roadside bombs and small arms and indirect fire, continues to harm Afghan civilians, to include at least 150 attacks last month, according to ISAF records.

Don't call Staff Sgt. Salvatore "Sal" Giunta a hero.

Don't say that he went above the call of duty when he single-handedly stopped two terrorists from kidnapping his wounded buddy during a ferocious firefight in Afghanistan in 2007.

Because as Giunta sees it, he was just doing his job. He didn't do anything that any other paratrooper in 1st Platoon, Battle Company, 173rd Airborne Brigade Combat Team -- or anyone in the United States military for that matter -- wouldn't have done, and he can't quite understand what all the fuss is about.

Violence in Guinea as Opposition Leader Looks Set to Win Presidency

Riot police fought stone-throwing demonstrators in Guinea's capital, as it appears a long-time opposition leader has won last week's presidential election.

Supporters of former president Cellou Diallo burned tires in the street and threw stones at riot police just west of Conakry's Hamdallaye Mosque. Security forces responded with tear gas, chasing the demonstrators back into neighborhoods north of Route le Prince, where they fired more tear gas.

British Couple Released by Somali Pirates

A British couple captured by Somali pirates more than one year ago has been released by their captors.

After just more than a year spent in Somalia, British citizens Paul and Rachel Chandler are finally going home. After a stop in Mogadishu to meet with the Somali prime minister, the two arrived at Nairobi's Jomo Kenyatta International Airport en route to their final destination: London.

Iraqi soldiers learn check-point operation skills

In support of Operation New Dawn, Company E, 1st Battalion, 8th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Advise and Assist Brigade, 4th Infantry Division, has assisted the 10th Iraqi Army Field Engineer Regiment in a variety of security-related training.

Company E has primarily trained the 10th IA FE Reg. on route clearance and reconnaissance tasks; however, according to Staff Sgt. Benjamin Ireland, of Pittsburgh, Company E recently began training Iraqi soldiers on check-point operations.
