ATF preparing answers to Congress following ‘Gillett revelation’

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives is preparing its response to a congressional subpoena for documents related to Project Gunrunner, and questions from the office of the Inspector General, and sources confirm that Phoenix Special Agent In Charge (SAC) William Newell is in Washington, D.C. this week, involved in that effort.

Belarus Security Detains 5 Suspects in Metro Bombing

Belarus Deputy Prosecutor General Andrei Shved has announced that security officials have taken five suspects into custody in connection with Monday's deadly bombing at a Minsk metro station.

Ivory Coast: Rape, Sexual Abuse Called Pervasive

Large numbers of women have been raped, sexually assaulted, beaten and abducted in Ivory Coast, according to a humanitarian aid organization.

The International Rescue Committee [IRC] is calling on the international community to “ramp up” support programs for victims of gender-based violence [GBV] “to address the needs of the humanitarian disaster.”

Liz Pender, the group’s women’s protection expert, is meeting with Ivorian women who’ve sought safety and shelter in Ivory Coast. “The reports I’m hearing are horrific,” she said.

Mexican Policemen Arrested for Protecting Cartel Hitmen

Mexican authorities have arrested 16 municipal police officers accused of protecting drug gang hitmen who massacred people found in mass graves near the U.S. border.

Officials say as many as 126 bodies were discovered near a ranch in Tamaulipas in recent days.

Authorities have blamed the Zetas drug gang for the killings and say 17 gang members have been arrested so far.

Migrants trying to reach the United States often cross through Tamaulipas. The state is where 72 Central American migrants were found shot to death last August. The Zetas have been blamed for that massacre as well.

Uruguayan Senate Annuls Amnesty for Dictatorship Crimes

Lawmakers in Uruguay have voted narrowly to annul an amnesty for crimes against humanity committed during the country's 1973 to 1985 dictatorship.

By a margin of 16 to 15, the Senate voted late Tuesday to overturn the measure, known as the Expiry Law. The bill now goes to the lower house for minor changes. Lawmakers spent more than 12 hours debating the bill before putting it to a vote.

ISAF Joint Command morning operational update

A combined Afghan and coalition force killed several insurgents, including the Taliban’s central appointed leader for Jowzjan province, Maulawi Qudus, and detained several suspected insurgents during a security operation in Darzab District, Jowzjan province, yesterday.

The targeted leader governed Taliban operations for the Qush Tepah District, Jowzjan province and was a strategic planner directing funding for operations and improvised explosive device emplacement.
