Evidence mounts that government, not gun shops, arming Mexican cartels

PITTSBURGH — As the National Rifle Association gathers here for its annual convention starting today — an event that NRA Executive Vice President Wayne LaPierre predicted to this column yesterday would attract possibly 70,000 people — there is mounting evidence that this country’s government, not its gun shops or gun shows, is largely responsible for arming Mexican drug cartels.

2 Killed, 100 Wounded in Uganda Riots

Riots in Uganda's capital have left at least two people dead and hundreds wounded after police fired live ammunition rounds, rubber bullets and tear gas at protesters.

Rioters burned tires and set up blockades in parts of Kampala to protest the latest arrest of opposition leader Kizza Besigye.

Besigye was arrested on Thursday for the fourth time this month after security forces stopped his car in Kampala. Video showed police smashing the car window and spraying the opposition leader with tear gas.

President Yoweri Museveni has warned that such protests will not be tolerated.

Morocco Probes al-Qaida Links to Deadly Bombing

A Moroccan government official says authorities are investigating a possible al-Qaida link to a bombing Thursday in Marrakech that left 16 people dead.

Communications Minister Khalid Naciri said Friday that investigators are pursuing all possible leads, including al-Qaida which has an active offshoot in the region.

The blast tore the facade off a two-story cafe in Jemaa el-Fna square in the heart of Marrakech. Authorities say at least 10 foreigners were among the dead.

Libyan Forces Clash with Tunisian Soldiers

Forces loyal to Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi clashed with Tunisian soldiers Friday, after crossing the border while pursuing rebel fighters.

Witnesses say Tunisian forces fought back, pushing the pro-Gadhafi soldiers back into Libya.

Libyan forces have been trying to reclaim the border crossing, in the western Wazin region, which was seized by rebels last week.

Tunisian officials say thousands of Libyans have fled to Tunisia during the past few days to escape the fighting.

ISAF Joint Command morning operational update

A combined Afghan and coalition security force captured a Taliban facilitator and several of his associates during a security operation in Zharay District, Kandahar province, yesterday.

The facilitator distributed weapons and supplies to insurgents in his network for attacks.

The security force targeted a compound in the district which intelligence reports indicated was associated with the facilitator. After isolating the compound and calling all occupants to exit, the force commenced their search.
