Medical staff simulate saving lives

ESC provides modern air traffic control system for Iraq

Members of the Electronic Systems Center completed work in September that improves and upgrades Iraq's air traffic control system.

The completion of this foreign military sales effort involved the delivery of two new air traffic control tower systems along with state-of-the-art radar and ATC-tower simulators to the Iraqi government.

Old Guard Soldiers blaze new trail

Most people enter competitions with one thought in mind -- winning. For Staff Sgt. Christopher Rance and Cpl. Christopher Stevens, Continental Color Guard, 3d U.S. Infantry Regiment (The Old Guard), creating new opportunities and erasing stereotypes is more important.

"When you think of The Old Guard you don't think sniper. We just want to open the door for other people," said Rance.

For the first time in the regiment's more than two hundred year history, Rance and Stevens will represent The Old Guard in a sniper/observer competition, Oct 14-16, in Elk Garden, W.Va.

USS New Orleans Completes CERTEX

USS New Orleans (LPD 18) returned to San Diego Oct. 12, after completing its final pre-deployment exercise in preparation for its upcoming deployment later this year.

New Orleans, alongside amphibious dock-landing ship USS Pearl Harbor (LSD 52), amphibious assault ship USS Makin Island (LHD 8), and embarked Marines assigned to the 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU) make up the Makin Island Amphibious Ready Group (ARG).

Evasion, conduct after capture training facility opens at Lackland

LACKLAND AIR FORCE BASE, Texas (AFNS) -- A one-of-a-kind facility, built specifically to accommodate all Air Force evasion and conduct after capture training, opened and training began Oct 3 here.

The program is for Airmen who will operate in high-risk environments that may place them at increased risk of isolation.

The new facility merges all Air Force ECAC training into one location under Det. 2, 22nd Training Squadron.

31st MEU begins certification exercise

The 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit began its certification exercise Oct. 6,, and upon completion will officially certify that the MEU is ready for operations in the Asia-Pacific area of operations.

CERTEX ensures that the 31st MEU is ready and able to conduct a wide variety of operations ranging from noncombatant evacuation operations, tactical recovery of aircraft and personnel, amphibious raids and assaults, theater security operations and humanitarian aid and disaster relief operations.
