Junkyard Dogs keep Apaches in the air

A call for the quick reaction force to support Task Force Bronco soldiers hits the Task Force Shooter Tactical Operations Center at Forward Operating Base Fenty. Without missing a beat, the battle captain, calls over to Company B “Killer Spades”, 1st Battalion, 10th Aviation Regiment, TF Shooter, to launch their AH-64 Apache helicopters; helicopters that wouldn’t be able to perform the mission without the help of the “Junkyard Dogs.”

Wranglers recover, dismantle downed aircraft

In a joint-service effort, soldiers with the 749th Combat Sustainment Support Battalion, 4th Sustainment Brigade, 310th Expeditionary Sustainment Command, and airmen with the 407th Air Expeditionary Group, worked together to recover and dismantle an out-of-commission aircraft on Contingency Operating Base Adder, Iraq, July 15.

The aircraft, a C-21 transportation jet for the Air Force, suffered damage beyond repair after making a hard landing in 2009. Nobody was injured in this incident.

Authorities Kill 3 Suspected Insurgents in Dagestan

Authorities in the Russian republic of Dagestan say three suspected insurgents were killed Friday in a shootout with police.

Law enforcement officials say a police patrol stopped a suspicious car during the night at a checkpoint in the capital Makhachkala. Police say the occupants of the car started shooting, and the police returned fire, killing all three.

Interfax reports the three insurgents are suspected of involvement in the killing of the deputy commander of the OMON-1 squad of the Interior Ministry of Dagestan, Shamil Murtuzaliyev.

Somali Pirates Demand Compensation from South Korea

A South Korean captain who is being held by Somali pirates says his captors are demanding that the South Korean government pay them compensation for pirates killed by its navy.

Captain Pak Hyeon contacted VOA by phone Friday, saying the pirates want Seoul to pay compensation for eight dead comrades and release another five held prisoner. He said the pirates have not named a price.

There was no immediate response by the South Korean government to those demands.

US Recognizes Libyan Rebel Group

The United States says it is recognizing Libya's rebel Transitional National Council, declaring that the country's leader Moammar Gadhafi no longer has any legitimate authority over the North African nation.

Assurances given

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton made the announcement Friday in Istanbul, as top officials from major Western and regional powers met to map strategies to strengthen the Libyan opposition in their bid to oust Gadhafi from his 42-year reign.

Detectives Hunt For Clues at Scene of Mumbai Attacks

India's home secretary says detectives are examining forensic evidence and surveillance video, as they hunt for clues into the deadly bomb blasts that hit Mumbai earlier this week.

R.K. Singh said Friday authorities have identified a scooter which they said contained one of the bombs. A total of three blasts occurred within 20 minutes of each other in India's financial capital Wednesday, killing at least 17 people and wounding 133 others.
